Our Barista Champions: Luise Metelka 2021

As we move towards 2024 and the return of regional barista events we want to acknowledge and celebrate the past and the people that were part of the journey in New Zealand. We asked our past champions about their journey in coffee competitions in NZ to help inspire the competitive baristas and coffee community of 2024.

Where and when did you start in coffee? I started my coffee journey in Melbourne 10 years ago.

When did you first start to compete? First time was in 2018 in Wellington

What did you learn along the way? I learned a lot about attention to detail, which has been crucial for my job and day-to-day life. It also provided me with a better understanding of how the supply chain works, and I was fortunate enough to visit Colombia in 2019. That trip remains one of the most influential travels I have experienced.

What was your motivation, what did you want to achieve? My motivation initially was to learn and progress in the coffee industry. Eventually, I started to view competitions as platforms for new ideas and pushing progress, so I aimed to use them to present some of my visions.

Most memorable experience as a champion, what did you get out of it? One of my most memorable experiences as a champion was going to Melbourne and working alongside the Flight and Veneziano teams. They provided incredible support and mentorship.

Who helped you along the way? The team from Flight Coffee! Thank you for everything xx

Where are you now? I am currently studying Data Analytics in Bali!
