EECA are creating an energy benchmarking tool for the coffee sector. We need your help to fill in this quick 1-minute survey – it’s faster than doing the census!
Once created, the tool will help coffee roasters to compare their energy use for production costs against similar-sized New Zealand roasters.
Any information that you provide will not be shared with external parties and will be used for the sole purpose of creating the Energy Benchmarking Tool. All data in the final Energy Benchmarking tool will be anonymised so that you cannot identify specific businesses.

Getting started on the journey to reduce your roastery’s energy intensity and emissions can be daunting. The coffee decarbonisation pathway has tools, resources, and information under development to help measure and ultimately reduce emissions in a coffee roastery – but what does it look like in practice?
Auckland-based Kōkako Organic Coffee Roasters opened in 2001 and has a distinct focus on sustainability being certified organic, fair trade, and climate neutral.
The business was built as an organic roaster and as it grew so did its focus on sustainability. Kōkako Organic Coffee Roasters owner Mike Murphy says business is inextricably linked to people and the environment and has a major leadership role to play in changing habits and driving positive change.
“We have always respected the foundations the business was built on as an organic roaster, we have focused to build on this. Sustainability also means innovation and efficiency, so apart from the social and environmental considerations it is also economically beneficial. We have always aspired to take a leadership position in sustainable business, and share our learnings with whoever is interested in what we are doing.” Mike Murphy says.

Our project with EECA (Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority) is now at the next step where we get together and conduct workshops to understand what decarbonizing our coffee industry will look like and how the steps will evolve for us in this kaupapa.
You will hear about the unique challenges facing everyone in our industry and you are invited to put forward your ideas. The language and terminology are different from what we might be accustomed to and likewise, we’re educating EECA on how roasteries use energy and the language around our operations.
EECA’s Sector Decarbonisation Programme is collaborating with a variety of sector associations and technical experts to connect New Zealand businesses with world-class innovation and best practice guidance to decarbonise at a sector level. We are proud to move towards the end goal which is for roasteries to move away from fossil fuels, take steps to improve existing processes, equipment, and operations, and ultimately make the transition to renewable energy more successful and cost-effective.

Scott Pepler is heading up our Sustainability Portfolio initially focussing on a specific project in conjunction with crown entity EECA (Energy Efficiency & Conservation Authority). The next step is to conduct expressions of interest, meet with you, and conduct workshops to understand what decarbonizing our coffee industry will look like and how the steps will evolve for us in this journey.
We are planning to meet in the three main cities, potentially involving some online accessibility with Q & A sessions aimed at front-footing this important and imminent change. Your attendance and voices are critical for the future-proofing of our industry and how we power it.

We have exciting progress in the energy sector but we need your help!
At this year’s AGM, there was a discussion about the use of gas in roasters as a finite resource. Lumen, a survey company working for the crown entity, Energy Efficiency and Conservations Authority (EECA) has approached us as they want to understand the use of energy in our industry.
EECA is researching energy use in the whole Food and Beverage sector in New Zealand. They aim to understand product manufacturing and how to transition towards a lower emissions future. Taking a particular interest in the coffee industry, they want to look at all aspects of production and distribution.
Why are they requesting your energy data?
Your data will enable EECA to develop and identify energy savings and decarbonization pathways for your business operations and similar businesses in the sector.
You will be able to access the published results of this exercise for your own energy analytics and gain a useful sector-wide view of energy usage. There are energy grants that your company may be able to take advantage of, eg EV fleets or Solar panels for your roastery in the future.
What data are they seeking?
– Detailed energy data about your site(s) and your organization.
– Annual energy consumption data for the 2019 and 2020 calendar years.
– Energy balances split by fuel type, end-use type, and technology.
How long will this survey take?
Around 20-30 min, and you’ll need ALL your energy use information handy. This survey is critical to the future of our industry. We thank you in advance for your help and valuable insights.
