Supporting the Next Generation of Competitors
Entering a coffee championship for the first time can be both exciting and intimidating. Many talented baristas hesitate to compete simply because they don’t know where to start or don’t have the support network that experienced competitors often rely on.
The Buddy Champion Program was created to make coffee competitions more accessible by supporting first-time competitors and encouraging more people to step into the competition arena.
Through guidance, shared experience, and genuine encouragement, this program helps newcomers feel confident, prepared, and connected to the wider competition community.
How the Program Works
Each first-time competitor is paired with an experienced competitor and or coach who acts as their ‘Buddy’ throughout the preparation period.
Your buddy will be there to:
- Explain competition structure, expectations, and rules
- Share insights, knowledge, and preparation tips
- Offer guidance and encouragement throughout the journey
- Be a trusted point of contact for questions and support
- Help ease first-competition nerves
Coffee competitions are rarely achieved alone — they are built with the help of a community. The Buddy Champion Program helps ensure newcomers have someone in their corner from the very beginning.
Program Commitment
Each newcomer competitor will receive support from their Buddy Champion through:
- Two in-person meetings
- Two online meetings
These sessions provide time to discuss preparation, answer questions, and help competitors feel ready and confident leading into the championship. It is important to note that travel and expenses will be the competitor’s responsibility and will not be covered by this program or NZSCA.

The goal of the Buddy Champion Program is simple: to grow the competition community by making it more welcoming, supportive, and accessible for everyone.
